Who is it for?

This program is designed for students aged 11 to 14. The program Lower Secondary is developed to be easy connected to Primary and allows careful following of the student’s progress. It also provides a perfect preparation of the students that will continue to Upper Secondary, High School.

Levels

Level 7 - age of the students: 11- 12 years
Level 8 - age of the students: 12- 13 years
Level 9 - age of the students: 13- 14 years

Goals of the program

The program is a natural continuance of the primary program. Taught in the same way and using the same methods, the lower secondary program deepens the students' knowledges of the core subjects and enriches them by adding additional subjects.

GRADING SYSTEM

In the lower secondary phase, the students are being graded continuously. They have regular checks and assignments and at the beginning of every month the parens receive Progress Reports in every subject.
There are two exam week throughout the school year:
1. Mid-term in December
2. Final in May

SUBJECTS

English

Our Lower Secondary English enables learners to communicate confidently and effectively. It enables them to develop the skills to respond to a range of information, media and texts with enjoyment. Learners who follow this framework will develop a first language competency in English based on a curriculum designed to be successful in any culture and to promote cross-cultural understanding.

 

English as a second language

This curriculum framework develops learners’ speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in English. The curriculum is based on the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR. The framework is used across the world to map learners’ progress in English.

The curriculum is presented in ve content areas or ‘strands’. These are further divided into ‘substrands’. The ve strands and substrands are:

Phonics, spelling and vocabulary

Grammar and punctuation

Reading

Writing

Speaking and listening

Macedonian is an obligatory subject in our school for Macedonian speaking students. It covers the history of the Macedonian language, phonetics, phonology, prose, poetry. The curriculum is constituted in full accordance to the Macedonian framework.

In this class, the students have the opportunity to focus on Macedonian books and to develop love and passion towards reading books adequate for their age.

The second foreign language that our Lower Secondary students are learning is German.

The curriculum framework explores six content areas: number, algebra, geometry, measure, handling data and problem solving. The first five content areas are all underpinned by problem solving. It provides a structure for the application of mathematical skills. Mental strategies are also an important part of the number content. The curriculum focuses on principles, patterns, systems, functions and relationships, so that learners apply their mathematical knowledge and develop a holistic understanding of the subject.

The curriculum frameworks for each subject for Lower Secondary are organised into three stages corresponding to the first three years of secondary education. They reflect the teaching target for each year group and provide comprehensive learning objectives. For Lower Secondary Mathematics, the curriculum is presented in six content areas or ‘strands’. These are further divided into ‘substrands’. The six strands and substrands are:

This curriculum framework covers four content areas: scientific enquiry, biology, chemistry and physics. Scientific enquiry is about considering ideas, evaluating evidence, planning work, and analysing data. The scientific enquiry objectives underpin biology, chemistry and physics. They are focused on developing confidence and interest in scientific knowledge. Environmental awareness and some history of science are also part of the curriculum.

For the Lower Secondary Science, the curriculum is presented in four content areas or ‘strands’. These are further divided into ‘substrands’. The four strands and substrands are:

In the social studies class, Lower Secondary students learn:

  • Geography
  • History

By attending this class, in the Geography part the students start by learning the basis about Geography, planet Earth, the continents, countries, oceans, seas, lakes and mountains.

In the history part of this subject, the students learn the complete history of the countries beginning from Early ages, though Middle ages and to Modern times.

The music classes in our school are focusing in two sections:

  • Theory of Music
  • Practical part

Our music teachers are ready to develop the love towards music in every student. The music classes are time of the day when the students get to enjoy good and quality music, by also learning the history behind it as well as learning about the musicians.

During the week, two to three hours are dedicated to sports.

Our Lower Secondary students get to practice sports in a modern sports center and they get to choose from variety of activities such as:

We are delighted to introduce Global Perspectives for learners aged 11 to 14 years as part of our lower secondary programme.

What will students learn? 

The programme develops the skills of research, analysis, evaluation, reflection, collaboration and communication. It strengthens the links across English as a first or second language, mathematics, science and ICT Starters.

Research says that the earlier students start to develop and practise their skills, the greater the impact on their learning. Making Global Perspectives available to younger students will develop and embed cross-curricular skills at an earlier age, supporting them in their studies as they progress to Cambridge Upper Secondary and beyond.

How is the programme taught? 

Lower Secondary is made up of a series of Challenges. There are six Challenges a year. Teachers can integrate the Challenges into their existing teaching or lessons, and do as many as they like.
